Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 1/2 cups yellow mustard
3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce -- vegetarian version
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Place all the ingredients in a small pan. Heat over the lowest heat
setting possible, whisking continuously, until the sugar is fully
dissolved.
Remove from the heat. Scrape into a lidded bowl or jar and allow to cool.
Use immediately or refrigerate up to 2 weeks.
Makes about 1 1/2 cups (6 one-quarter cup servings)
AuthorNote: This mustard-based sauce is how South Carolina does barbecue.
Commercially made sauces are full of preservatives and often high fructose
corn syrup as well. Making your own sauces and condiments at home means
you know exactly what goes into the finished products. Homemade sauces
taste fresher and better than commercially made as well.
