Gloria, you poor thing!
Sometimes even the best intentioned health care workers know not what they do. I'm sorry for your extended pain and will be praying for your recovery.
While I was visiting a friend in FL, she fell, wrenching her knee in the process. She has a lot of arthritis, so much so that the ER doc thought she had a transverse fracture of her tibia. Part of the "care" she received included the ER staff wrapping a splint around her leg. Well, this friend is quite short and extremely overweight. They first brought in a splint for a tall person. You can imagine how much unnecessary pain their attempt to wrap this splint around her leg caused, especially with it being the wrong size. Anyway, after several attempts and a lot of movement, they realized it was the wrong size and got a different splint, which, due to her weight, didn't fit easily or well. I pulled aside a nurse whom I thought may be receptive to ideas and suggested that if she had to splint another patient, she consider fitting the device to the unaffected limb first to make any needed adjustments. Moving an injured limb, broken or not, is quite painful for the patient. I knew about fitting to the uninjured side first because it was covered when I took an EMT course many years ago. ER nurses usually see patients after they are all splinted and bandaged, so don't usually have that piece of the training. Your assisting EMTs were limited by their training. Nobody ever has too much training, and EMTs can be turned out after taking one course of probably under 200 hours. It has been enough time that I not only have forgotten how many hours we trained, but the time probably has been increased by now.
Good luck going forward. It isn't easy getting older, is it? I like it better than the alternative, still, at least!
Hugs,
Rosaleen
